When Foster Becomes Forever...

When Foster Becomes Forever...

We were lucky enough to meet Stephen and Luna when she was still a foster dog, but it was obvious even then that they had an incredibly special bond and when we heard that she was going with him when he moves to Ireland later this year, we were over the moon! Here's a little insight into their story....

"I always thought it would be great to foster but I had a variety of reasons as to why it wasn’t possible…ranging from I don’t have the time, I’m away a lot and all the other usual ones… Well, I’m not sure what happened but on October 24th last year, I was driving home on the M5 with a dog the size of a baby giraffe in the back of the car! I’d just fostered a doggie for the first time, her name was Luna, a 9 year old Bullmastiff Cross.

I kept seeing Luna’s face on the Sydney Animal Second-chance Inc. Facebook feed…and well this time I couldn’t ignore it, I had to offer my help. And it just happens to be one of the best decisions I’ve ever made!

Luna is the most beautiful girl with the biggest heart, a massive smoocher, who loves her cuddles. She came to SAS (very unwell, with a number of health conditions. It was so wonderful to see her come back to health. All the things that I thought might be a challenge, we worked around. It was incredibly rewarding to feel I was playing a part in getting her well and giving her that second chance. Something that every rescue dog deserves. She got stronger and stronger, her personality and confidence blossomed and although 9 years old, it was like she was a puppy again.

Who knew we would have so much in common… My favourite things are eating, lying on the couch, staying up late watching TV and hiking… and these just happen to be her favourite things too… 😊
When it came to the time to find Luna a new home… I couldn’t do it, I loved her too much to say goodbye. So, I guess as the saying goes, I was a ‘failed fosterer’… and this was one time I was happy to fail, as I’d just found my best friend. The day I got the transfer of ownership was one of the happiest days of my life. It was official, we were family! (Hopefully she was happy too).
But even if I was unable to keep Luna, I would have been happy to have played a part in helping her find a forever home and the life she deserved. If you are thinking about fostering, please try it. It’s the best feeling in the world making them feel loved and knowing you’re helping them on their journey to a better life. You learn so much and especially about what’s important in life. You also get to be involved with and meet an amazing community of people. I’m so much better for meeting them.

Thank you to Sydney Animal Second-Chance (SAS), who are just the most selfless people I’ve ever met. The work that they do, the dogs that they save… They’re just the best.

All the staff at Beverley Hills Animal Hospital. The team that provided the care and expertise to bring Luna back to health, treating all the animals they care for as they would their own. Incredible.

And the team at Savourlife for the work they do, the treats and nutrition for Luna and the genuine care and support from their team. Not many companies like this, very special.

Dogs are the best, please help change the life of a dog that needs it… and they’ll change yours"

Thank you so much for sharing your story Stephen, and your kind words, we wish you and Luna the most amazing life together! 🧡
