Geelong Animal Rescue (GAR) commenced in 2012, is a 100% not-for-profit organisation run entirely by unpaid volunteers and is registered with the Australian Charities Not-for-profit Commission (ACNC). GAR rescues at least one unwanted animal from death row across Victorian pounds every second day. On arrival, every GAR animal is vet checked and treated, microchipped, desexed, vaccinated, fed, treated for fleas & worms, trained where necessary and above all, given lots of love in preparation for future adoption. Whilst GAR works with GAWS (the pound in Moolap) and 10 other pounds across the state, GAR and GAWS are very different. GAR is not a pound, but instead operates from within the homes of its 150+ local volunteers, has no on-site veterinary care, no paid staff and receives no government funding. To date, GAR has rescued over 1 700 cats and dogs at a cost of over $1 000 000.
Adoption Policy: Strict
GAR charges an adoption fee for all of our animals. Adoption fees are charged to help cover the costs associated with animal rescue. The money we collect for adoptions helps us cover 48% of our costs only. On top of our vet expenses, we also have animal food, flea & worm treatments, change of ownership fees, public liability insurance & animal transport – just to name a few. Without the tireless efforts of our fundraising team and the incredible generosity of the public, GAR could not survive.
